Carole Brown Underhill

February 22, 1939 — July 23, 2020

St. Paul

Carole (Brown) Underhill is a Christian who placed her faith and salvation in Jesus Christ. Born in St. Paul, February 22, 1939 to Albert and Marie Brown. She has been married to her faithful husband Bruce for 60 years. They both grew up in St. Paul, Carole attending Johnson High School. Carole went to the University of Minnesota for a short time before marrying Bruce and having two daughters, Shelley and Susan. The family lived in Columbus, Ohio from 1960-1968 before returning to St. Paul. Carole was a stay-at-home mom until the girls went to college. She then worked retail at Minnesota Fabrics and as a receptionist/cashier at Abbott Paint & Carpet on Grand Avenue. Carole was active in the girl’s activities while growing up as room mother, field trip chaperone, VBS and summer camp volunteer, and Corban (youth choir) trip chaperone. She attended countless ballgames and choir concerts over the years for Bruce and the girls. When the girls were young the family sang together as The Underhill Family singers. Singing at churches, events and banquets. Carole was a great cook and always made food flavorful. Just not enough according to the son-in-law’s to be who came for dinner while the girls were dating. In recent years Terry and the grandkids have taken over cooking for family events. Grandma always gave an approving, “yum!” Carole enjoyed her grandchildren most of all. Attending events, providing childcare and especially loved when the kids came to play in the “woods” in the backyard. As most grandma’s will agree, her grandchildren were her greatest treasure. Carole and Bruce loved to go camping. With the girls when they were young and later as empty nesters in their camper. They still see a group of camping friends from Gloria Die days as life-long friends. Carole loved antiques and enjoyed decorating her home. She has done many crafts over the years and is well known for her gingerbread houses! Carole also loved to tell Bruce which flowers she wanted in their yard. This was Carole’s way to “do” many things. Bruce as her hands, feet and eyes. When Bruce and Carole returned to St. Paul they attended Gloria Die Lutheran Church. Then Trinity of Minnehaha Falls, currently North Heights-Roseville for many years. Church is where Carole spent much of her time, talents and treasure. Carole’s deep friendships have come from her church communities. Carole was also able to blend childhood friends and new friends into caring friendship circles.  Carole has a large extended family on her mother’s side. Marie was one of 10 children. Carole enjoyed growing up with close cousins and participating in many family gatherings. Christmas was especially meaningful for the Busch Family. After years of medical issues and physical disability, Carole peacefully passed away on July 23, 2020. We are thankful to many who have provided medical ministry to Carole over the years Carole is welcomed home by her Heavenly Father, daughter Shelley Ronayne who passed away in 2010, her parents, extended family and friends. Survived by husband Bruce, daughter Susan Mencel (Terry), son-in-law Tim Ronayne (Sarah), grandchildren Caitlin Ronayne, Meghan Ronayne Rust (Tyler), Caleb Mencel (Dana), Marin Mencel Tucholke (Cody).
