Clarence H. Benson, age 97 of St. Paul, passed away July 13, 2024.
Preceded in death by parents, Harold and Clara; brother, Gerald; and nephew, Kip Benson.
Survived by beloved wife, Yoshiko; daughter, Marie; son, Allen; sister-in-law, Phyllis Benson; brother, Ernie (Linda); many other relatives and friends.
Clarence Benson grew up in Frogtown as a member of the Blair Street Society, regularly hanging out at Minnehaha playground.
He went to school at Saint Stephanus grade school and eventually became a proud graduate of Mechanic Arts High School. After graduation, he joined the Navy, where he spent 24 years, serving in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He also did two tours in Antarctica as part of Operation Deep Freeze. He left the service to attend to his growing family, only to spend another 20-plus years working security for Unisys (and its various iterations) as a locksmith.
Outside of work, he had many interests including toy trains, his high school M Club, and activities with various veterans’ organizations. Clarence was well loved by all, especially his family.
Funeral service 11:00 AM Thursday, July 25 at St. Stephanus Lutheran Church, 739 Lafond Ave., St. Paul. Visitation at the church from 10-11 AM Thursday. Private interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.
