Darnell was born in Wynn, Arkansas on January 18th, 1948 to Bearice Cross and Oderin Barnes. Growing up, Darnell was outgoing and full of life and was never afraid of hard work. He would often work in the field to earn himself a few dollars. He attended Childress High school until he left for Job Corps at the tender age of 17.
While attending Job Corps, Darnell found his love for old school cars and auto mechanics. After finishing Job Corps, Darnell worked for American Hoist for several years. Part-time work included working on cars at a shop that was owned and operated by Darnell and a close friend. They operated two separate locations in St. Paul’s Frogtown area. Darnell soon landed a custodial job at Technical Vocational institute (TVI), currently known as Saint Paul College. He worked there for several years before starting a new job with Webster Elementary School, also known as Obama Elementary. Darnell continued his career with Obama until his retirement in 2010.
During Darnell’s retirement, he made sure to enjoy the special moments. He attended several graduations, birthday parties, BBQ’s and made sure to get in a little fishing as well. He traveled and even enjoyed a cruise or two. He especially enjoyed watching the Vikings on game day. On random summer nights you could find Darnell playing his air guitar and singing to the sounds of the blues. Darnell attended several youth sporting events and also donated to local organizations including the West Side boosters and other clubs in the St. Paul area.
Darnell was proceeded in death by his son, Darnell Barnes Jr.; parents, Oderin Barnes, Beatrice Cross-Barnes; sisters, Betty Ewing, Celia Ann Smith, Thelma Daniel; and brothers, Edward Houston, Otis Barnes, and Carl Barnes.
