Jane McEvoy

April 30, 1939 — March 18, 2024

Jane (Janie) McEvoy died in St. Paul on March 18th, 2024. She was born in St Paul on April 30, 1939, the oldest of the 7 children of Jim and Harriet McEvoy. She lived in St Paul most of her life.

Preceded in death by her brother Jimmy, her parents, and the father of her children and first husband, Bill Hanlon.

Survived by three daughters and five grandchildren: Katie (David) Gesensway, Carrie (Don) Sours, Ben, Julia, Elizabeth Gesensway; longtime partner, Richard Aasness; siblings, Anne (James) Carmouche, Mary McEvoy (Terry Fruth), Katie McEvoy (Bill Blackburn), David (Lori) McEvoy, Frank (Leslie) McEvoy; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Janie had many interests and enthusiasms, was adventurous, generous, and loved traveling with family. She had a strong love of family and a prodigious memory of family history. Affectionately called “Aunty Zany,” her funny stories became memorable performances. She loved reading, gardening, babies, children, cats, and “select” dogs.

As a lifelong member of Hamline Methodist Church, Janie often served doughnuts and worked at the State Fair. She had life long connections with friends, arranging regular luncheons for the Wilson High School Class of ‘57.

She majored in Political Science at the University of Minnesota and was one of the original U of M Pom Pom Girls, performing at the Rose Bowl in 1961.

She maintained an active interest in politics and social issues throughout her life, voting in every election since she reached voting age, and working on many political campaigns. She was a delegate for Jesse Jackson at the DFL Convention in 1984. She participated in many demonstrations against war and against nuclear arms (getting arrested in Nevada!).

Janie had a strong interest in medicine and health.  She worked at Ancker Hospital and later became certified in medical transcription, showing great attention to detail.  Her conscientiousness extended to going to the ward to confirm patient details.  In later life, Janie proudly led a Bone Builders exercise group.  She worked at the Post Office, the Census Bureau, as an adjunct sociology professor and in telephone newspaper sales. Throughout this time, she owned and managed rental properties in St Paul, proving to be a generous, ethical, and successful businesswoman (although she probably wouldn’t have thought of herself in that way).

She will be missed by all who have loved her. We are grateful for the compassionate care Janie received at United Hospital.
