John Henry Berg, a proud veteran of The Vietnam War, age 77 of Arden Hills, passed away on August 7, 2023.
In 1967 John served as a team leader in the elite 9th Infantry Division Long Range Patrol. He graduated from the special forces to Recondo school in Nha Trang often referred to as “the most dangerous school in the military. “
John was very well known and active in the American Legion, Army Ranger Association, and was always a center of hospitality at reunions of his LRRP/Ranger unit. After Vietnam John resumed his college studies and graduated from Mankato State.
John was very generous. Along with regularly donating to multiple animal shelters, he also gave to organizations such as Braille Books for Blind Children, US Department Sheriffs Association, and The American Heart Association.
John had a passion for hunting, traveling, attending LRRP/Ranger reunions, going out to eat, going to the movie theatre and eating buttered popcorn, and spending time with his family and friends.
Preceded in death by wife, Cheryl Berg; and sister, Phyllis Roxie Damon-Mulazzi.
He is survived by his long-time partner, Ellen Christofferson; stepchildren, Eric Christofferson and Kari Smith; siblings, Jeane Marie Rodriguez, Sandra Mae Deneault-McNitt, Jennifer O’Hara Damon, Joseph Valiant Damon, William Leslie Damon, and Kurt Fredrick Damon.
John and Ellen met on a blind date in 1996 and began their adventure together. Ellen’s family quickly became John’s family and there were a lot of laughs and love shared. Throughout the years, John and Ellen provided a home for John's dog Snuffy, and numerous stray cats.
Funeral service 10:30 AM Thursday, August 17 at Mueller-Bies Funeral Home - Roseville, 2130 N. Dale St. at County Rd B. Visitation from 9:30 - 10:30 AM Thursday. Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Following the interment service at Fort Snelling, please join the family at 1:00 PM for a luncheon at the Roseville VFW Post #7555 1145 Woodhill Drive, Roseville, MN 55113.
