Luzetta Mitchell, better known as Lu, was born January 19, 1928 to Theresia and Joseph Schuman. Lu was the third of 9 children. She spent her childhood on the family farm in Maynard, MN.She only attended school thru 8th grade since she was needed to help with the younger siblings. Lu decided to get her GED when she was 60!
Lu married Donald Mitchell on May 25, 1957 and they lived in St. Paul, MN. They had five children, Barbara, Mary Beth (Dave) Sampica, Paul (Jill), Brian (Ann) and Jeffrey; eight grandchildren, Scott, Carla (Steve) Marich, Keith, Jake, Molly, Kelly, Raquel, and Shannon; and two great-granddaughters, Natalie and Courtney.
Her faith was a huge part of her life. She became an active member of Maternity of Mary parish in 1958, frequently going to daily mass, a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, the Prime Timers and helping with various church events. Mom spent a lot of time in the kitchen cooking great meals and desserts. Everyone wanted her “melt in your mouth” crisp sugar cookies and her apple squares!
Lu liked playing cards and bingo, going to the casino to play the penny slot machines and traveling. Lu was well known for her sewing abilities making us clothes. All the ladies and girls loved her panties!!
Growing up we would go camping almost every weekend, so she would stock the pantry and load up our things in the pop-up camper. We always had a great time but now realize how much work it was for her. After years of camping they purchased a cabin on Lake Dunham in Wisconsin. She enjoyed going there, until she wasn’t able to travel anymore.
Lu lived the last months under the wonderful care of the staff at Oak Meadows in Lake Elmo, MN.
Lu will be greatly missed by her loving family and many friends.
