Just a Little About Mary
Mary was in the first class (6-4-1955) to graduate from Our Lady of Peace High School in St. Paul (now Mitchell-Hamline Law School) after having to delay graduation for three years due to her need to stay home to care for her mother, father, and younger siblings.
In her twenties, Mary welcomed 23 welfare babies into her home, which helped make ends meet at the time. Later in life, Mary (and Les) took care of Mary's aging parents as well as Mary's aunt who lived nearby.
Les and Mary had the good fortune to travel to many places in the US and Europe. Mary made 42 years of retreats at Christ the King in Buffalo, Minnesota.
Mary gave a lot of time to St. Joseph’s in all these ways: one year on finance council; 40 years as a money counter; two years with Loaves & Fishes; one year with Centennial Food Shelf (Fund for the Poor); six months with Meals-on-Wheels; 45 years with Funeral Ministry & Lunches; as well as numerous years working on the Parish Festival Committee; Council of Catholic Women; Sunday Coffee & Donut Ministry; Office Helper.
Mary’s greatest gift to St. Joseph’s was her involvement with the restoration of the Old Church and is summed up in the words of a friend and parishioner: "She was so instrumental in getting that historic church done! She was the force behind it all! She was determined that her and Les would celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary there. It took a few years but … She told me she celebrated all her sacraments there.”
Mary slipped peacefully away from the bonds of this Earth on Tuesday June 29th, 2021 holding hands with Nicole (one of our hospice angels) and clutching her rosary in her other hand.
Jon and Bob cannot praise Olive Grove Hospice enough for their compassionate and professional care.
