Roger Allen Binning, age 75, of St. Paul, passed away at home on February 11, 2023.He died due to complications from kidney cancer.Roger, an only child, was born to Alvin and Helen Binning on March 6, 1947, in Pipestone, Minn. Many days of his childhood were spent helping on his family’s farm. Roger would tell stories of life on the farm, such as wrangling chickens or helping his parents with chores.Roger’s schooling started in a rural one-room schoolhouse for a short amount of time, but he moved to the larger school in town, eventually graduating from Pipestone High School. He attended the University of Minnesota-Morris, earning a bachelor’s degree in economics. After college graduation, Roger started a job with the State of Minnesota in the Agriculture Department as a statistician, where he would also do work for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS). When talking to his kids, he would often simplify his job responsibilities at work to “Bean Counter.” Although he worked a variety of jobs as a young person, as an adult he worked only one job for over 40 years, retiring in 2013. At age 36, Roger met Nancy Cornman at a singles group at Bethel Lutheran Church in St. Paul. After dating for a year and half, Roger mentioned to Nancy that he thought marriage was a good idea; after initially thinking his passing comment was a joke, Nancy realized he was serious. They were married on May 11, 1985, an unseasonably hot day. Roger was a faithful member of the local church. Notably, he served at St. Stephanus Lutheran Church for the past 30 years in roles that included the church Treasurer and usher. Over the years, Nancy and Roger welcomed three children into the family: Amy, Zachary and Rachel. Eventually they also gained one son-in-law, Sam, when he married Rachel in 2019. Roger was a very reliable father and a consistent presence in their lives. In addition to many day-to-day activities of raising children, he served as the family bookkeeper, handling all of the practical logistics of family life. That attention to detail extended into his children’s adulthoods as he would often give financial advice and help manage accounts. Although he was frugal in many areas, he consistently supported family outings to local restaurants and always took the full bill.Roger was often content to sit quietly amidst family conversations and contribute sparingly, albeit often humorously with short pithy commentary. Over the past 19 months Roger enjoyed a new role as grandfather to Wesley, reading him books, sharing smiles and chuckling at Wesley’s toddler antics. Roger will be greatly missed by his family. While we’re grateful Roger is no longer sick and suffering, we will miss the many good things Roger brought to our lives. We are thankful for Roger’s faith in Jesus Christ and look forward to being reunited with him one day in heaven.Preceded in death by parents, Alvin and Helen.
