Sandra Kay Winegarden, 71, was received into the waiting arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 4, 2023 at her home on Lake Camelot in the Town of Rome, Adams County, Wisconsin after a six-year battle with cancer.
Sandy was born December 7, 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri, to Carroll M. and Marcella J. (Pinick) Casey. She became a child of God on January 20, 1952 through the waters of Holy Baptism by the Reverend T. A. Weinhold at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Missouri. She reaffirmed her Baptism with her Confirmation in the Christian Faith on May 15, 1966 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Missouri. She was a church organist through most of her high school, college, and beginning teaching years. She was an active member of Lutheran Churches throughout her life.
She attended Clardy Elementary School in Kansas City, Antioch Middle School in Gladstone, Missouri, and graduated from Oak Park High School in 1970. Sandy then attended The Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville graduating in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Education and a minor in vocal music. Growing up Sandy always wanted to be a teacher and had a great love of children.
Her first teaching job took her to Sabetha, Kansas for three years. During that time, she met her husband-to-be through the US Mail. She met and married Alan D. Winegarden on November 25, 1976, and over almost 47 years they had and raised their two sons, Adam and Andrew. She lived in Kansas City, Gladstone, Sabetha, Seward, Nebraska, Columbia, Missouri, Vadnais Heights and Roseville, Minnesota, and moved to Lake Camelot in the Town of Rome, Wisconsin with a winter home in Sun City West, Arizona.
After moving to Nebraska in 1977, Sandy also taught vocal music for Seward Public Schools; she then took a full-time elementary position with Lincoln Public Schools until 1988, when they moved to Minnesota. There she continued her teaching career with North St Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale Public Schools, until her retirement in 2014 after 40 years of teaching.
Family was central to Sandy, and she loved to socialize with family and friends. Her home was always open to her sons’ friends and families as well as to her colleagues and her husband’s faculty. She stayed connected with extended family over the years and the miles.
She loved to travel with her husband, sons, and grandchildren. Her travels took her across and into most of the United States as well as to England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Greece, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Belize among others. She especially loved Colorado, Hawaii, and Alaska.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Alan; her sons, Adam of St Paul, Minnesota and Andrew (Elizabeth) of Spokane, Washington; and her grandchildren, Peyton Winegarden and Kieran Winegarden. She is also survived by brothers, Paul Casey (Deanna) and Timothy (Lori) Casey; as well as many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents in 2022; a granddaughter in 2021; and a sister-in-law, Carol Winegarden in 2016.
