Stan Strandlof

Stan ("Herbie") Strandlof was born in Minneapolis on October 25, 1950 to Herbert and Alpha (Nelson) Strandlof.  He died on May 22, 2019 in St. Paul, MN, after a long illness. He is preceded in death by his father, Herbert, grandparents, and aunts and uncles, and several cousins.  He is survived by his mother, Alpha; sisters Karen Hollanitsch and Eileen Strandlof; nephew Erick Hollanitsch; and cousins Marilyn Biebighauser and Jan Pavlisich; as well as several second cousins; and many friends.  

Stan was a life-long resident of Roseville.  He graduated from Alexander Ramsey, where he played trombone and base trombone in the band.  Shortly after high school he entered the Army Reserves.  Following his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, he returned to Roseville, and worked in the glass and mirror industry.  He eventually transitioned to railroad work, finally settling in the bridges and building department as a carpenter, and eventually, foreman.  He held positions in several locations for the Milwaukee Road, which became part of the Soo Line, and eventually the Canadian Pacific. 

Stan was an avid hockey player in his youth.  He loved playing "pickup" hockey games with his buddies on the pond behind his house and at the Lexington Elementary School hockey rink.  A highlight of his youth was when he and his Roseville team represented Minnesota at the National Juvenile Hockey Championship in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.  He also enjoyed golf, and fishing, and was a life-long grouse hunter.

Stan was a skilled carpenter/furniture builder, and hand-crafted many pieces over his lifetime, including custom pieces for the railroad.  He was often available to help a buddy with a building project.  He helped his dad construct the buildings at the family lake property on Baby Lake.  He especially loved spending his vacation time there in the fall, where he could enjoy the peace and quiet.  

An informal celebration of Stan's life is being planned for late summer or early fall.
