Age 87, of Roseville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on January 15, 2023.
Preceded in death by parents, Michael and Dorothy Hoffman; and sister, Sharon Ray.
Survived by wife, Alice; children, Brian Hoffman, Steven Hoffman, Lori (Mike) Sobczak; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Kyoko), Jordan (Alyssa), Jake (Amy), Emily; and great-grandchildren, Joelle & Avery.
Tom was born in Forest Lake, MN and grew up in St. Paul. He attended St. Luke's Grade School, St. Paul Central High School (Class of 1954) and St. Paul Vocational Technical Institute, graduating in 1956 (Printing). He also attended the University of Minnesota and later attended Metropolitan State University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976.
In 1957, Tom met the "love of his life", Alice June Rydberg. On October 31, 1959 they were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Cumberland, WI. They celebrated 63 years of marriage on October 31, 2022.
Tom worked in the printing trade for a few years and in 1960 began working for the American Can Company where he was active in the United Steelworkers Local Union 2127 for a number of years. He was elected Chairman of the Grievance Committee (1964-1978), Vice President of Local Union (1967-1970) and then President of the Local Union 2127 (1970-1978). In 1978 he left the Local Union and the American Can Company when he was appointed by the International Union President as an International Representative.
In 1981 he was appointed as the Sub District Director in Sub District 1 in District 11 USW which was headquartered in Minneapolis. He continued as Sub District Director until his retirement in April 2000.
In retirement Tom began his pursuit of leisure activities and was able to spend more time with his family. Tom and Alice spent time traveling on cruises, wintering in Fort Myers, FL and spending summers at their lake cabin in Siren, WI where the family enjoyed fishing, boating and family gatherings. Time spent at the lake was a very special time for all of the family.
Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 AM Tuesday, January 24 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 2090 Hamline Ave. N., Roseville. Visitation 4:00-8:00 PM Monday at
Mueller-Bies Funeral Home-Roseville, 2130 N. Dale St. at County Rd. B and at the church on Tuesday from 9:00-10:00 AM.
Interment Calvary Cemetery.
