An urn vault protects the urn when placed in the grave. Some cemeteries require them, while many do not. Some require them under certain conditions, such as if the urn is made of a fragile or biodegradable material, like ceramic or wood. Even if your cemetery does not require an urn vault, if you wish to have the urn preserved once buried you may opt to purchase one.
